The Chariot of the Forest
Bastar Dussehra is a phenomenon of collective faith. Unlike any other festival in India, it is governed by a strict hierarchy of tribal roles—from the carpenters who build the massive two-tiered chariot to the shamans who enter a state of trance. This journey is a transition into the heart of this rite. We prioritize the “Slow Trail,” moving between the grand ritual grounds of Jagdalpur and the silent village outposts where the spirit of the festival begins. This is an invitation to witness a living record of tribal sovereignty and forest heritage.
Phase 01: The Plateau Entry (Day 1)
Day 1: Arrival in Jagdalpur. A slow introduction to the capital of the frontier. We establish our base at a curated heritage outpost. Evening visit to the Danteshwari Temple to witness the initial ritual preparations and the gathering of the tribal deities.
Phase 02: The Forest Baseline (Day 2)
Day 2: Before the peak of the festival, we move into the Kanger Valley. A morning dedicated to the tiered cascades of Tirathgarh and the silence of the Sal canopy. This provides the environmental context for the tribes that converge upon the city.
Phase 03: The Chariot Rite (Day 3)
Day 3: The Rath Yatra. We witness the massive wooden chariot, built without a single nail, being pulled by hundreds of tribesmen through the streets of Jagdalpur. We focus on the labor and the rhythm of the pull, documenting the scale of this communal effort.
Phase 04: The Tribal Council (Day 4)
Day 4: Muria Durbar. A rare witness of the tribal parliament where the administrators and village elders gather to discuss the welfare of the people. This is followed by an entry into a Shaman’s village to observe the spiritual preparations that precede the final festival nights.
Phase 05: The Night of the Spirits (Day 5)
Day 5: Nisha Jatra. A nocturnal ritual involving deep spiritual offerings and ancestral songs. We spend the day in a hidden village of Bastar to share a traditional meal and observe how the festival is celebrated at the household level before returning for the midnight rites.
Phase 06: The Final Farewell (Day 6)
Day 6: Ohadi. Witnessing the ceremonial farewell of the deities as they begin their journey back to their respective forest outposts. A final morning in the plateau before the transition back for departure.
