The Heartbeat of the Forest
Sarhul marks the moment the forest turns — the Sal trees flowering, and with them the year’s first rituals. We come up from Ranchi to meet it at the right time, not as spectators but as guests of the tribal communities whose festival this is. What we see and take part in is set by them, day to day, ritual to ritual.
Day 1: The Highland Entry
Departure from Ranchi for a steady transition into our base in Jashpur. We meet a local field master to begin an unhurried introduction to the highland culture. The evening is spent over an ancestral dinner at a homestay, discussing the significance of the upcoming spring rituals.
Day 2: The Ridge and the Hearth
A morning hike through the Deshdekha ridgeline toward the summit of Madheshwar Parvat. We follow forest trails to observe the blooming landscape. The afternoon is spent in a traditional village, followed by a shared meal with a tribal family to understand the rhythms of home life before the festival begins.
Day 3: The Awakening
The first day of the Sarhul Festival. We witness the rituals of the Sal tree and hold quiet conversations with village elders and locals — a day to observe and understand what the harvest and nature worship mean here.
Day 4: The Festival Soak
A full day dedicated to the village celebration. We remain within the tribal settlement to experience the collective energy of the festival—the music, the communal dances, and the ancestral atmosphere. There is no rush; the day is designed to allow for a total immersion in the local pulse.
Day 5: The Final Return
One final morning in the waking village before the drive back to Ranchi for departure.
Ancestral Stewardship:
Our field team in Jashpur is drawn entirely from the tribal communities of the plateau. The landscape is not something they interpret for visitors — it is their own, and they set what is shown, what is not, and how it is approached.
Economic Integrity:
Every local partner and field master is paid a pre-agreed fee at industry-standard rates — transferred in advance, or handed over in person before we leave. Our field team on the plateau is tribal, and across a Jashpur journey around a third of the trip cost reaches the communities here and stays with them.
Social Trust:
Our presence during Sarhul is not something we can promise in advance. It is asked for every time, by the relationships our founder built in Jashpur personally, over a year on the ground — and a refusal is respected the same as an invitation.
